1800s - Mechanical Foundations

Charles Babbage designed the Difference Engine in 1822 to automate mathematical tables. He later conceived the Analytical Engine - a general-purpose mechanical computer with memory, a processor, and conditional branching - never completed in his lifetime but a century ahead of its time. Ada Lovelace wrote what is considered the first computer algorithm for it in 1843.

1930s-40s - The First Electronic Computers

Alan Turing published his theoretical framework for computation in 1936, introducing the concept of a universal computing machine. During World War II, Colossus (UK) broke Nazi Enigma codes. ENIAC (1945, USA) was the first general-purpose electronic computer, weighing 30 tonnes and filling a room. It used 18,000 vacuum tubes and consumed 150 kW of power.

1950s-60s - Transistors and Mainframes

The invention of the transistor at Bell Labs in 1947 replaced bulky vacuum tubes. IBM became dominant with mainframe computers used by corporations and governments. The first programming languages emerged: FORTRAN (1957) for science, COBOL (1959) for business. NASA used IBM mainframes to calculate Apollo trajectories.

1970s - The Microprocessor Revolution

Intel's 4004 (1971) was the first commercially available microprocessor - an entire CPU on a single chip. The Altair 8800 (1975) was the first home computer kit. Two college students named Bill Gates and Paul Allen wrote a BASIC interpreter for it and founded Microsoft. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple in 1976, releasing the Apple II in 1977.

1980s - The PC Era

IBM launched the IBM PC in 1981, setting the standard architecture still used today. Microsoft licensed MS-DOS to IBM, retaining the right to sell it to others - the deal that made Microsoft dominant. Apple's Macintosh (1984) introduced the graphical user interface and mouse to mainstream users. By the end of the decade, personal computers were in millions of homes and offices worldwide.

1990s-2000s - Internet and Mobile

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989-1991. Netscape's web browser brought the internet to ordinary users in 1994. Google launched in 1998. The dot-com bubble inflated and burst (2000). Apple's iPhone (2007) and the App Store (2008) launched the smartphone era. By 2010, more people accessed the internet via mobile than desktop.

2010s-Now - Cloud, Big Data, AI

Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure transformed computing into a utility. Machine learning shifted from academic curiosity to industrial tool. GPUs originally designed for gaming became the primary processors for AI training. The 2020s saw large language models go mainstream, with GPT-3 (2020) and subsequent models reshaping how people interact with computers fundamentally.

Quantum Computing

Classical computers use bits (0 or 1). Quantum computers use qubits that can exist in superposition (both 0 and 1 simultaneously) and become entangled. This allows certain problems (cryptography, drug discovery, materials science) to be solved exponentially faster. IBM, Google, and others have demonstrated small quantum processors; a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remains years away but is coming.
