๐Ÿ“– About Bromine

One of only two elements that are liquid at room temperature (the other being mercury). A reddish-brown, toxic liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. Its name comes from the Greek "bromos" meaning stench. Bromine compounds were once widely used as flame retardants and in leaded gasoline, though many uses have been phased out due to environmental concerns.

๐Ÿ”ง Uses and Applications

  • Flame retardants (in electronics and furniture)
  • Water purification (alternative to chlorine)
  • Photography (silver bromide)
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Methyl bromide fumigant (being phased out)

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Fact: Bromine is one of only two elements that exist as a liquid at standard room temperature and pressure. Mercury is the other. Bromine evaporates easily at room temperature, producing toxic reddish vapors visible above the liquid surface.
